Maplewood Farm

Hi everyone!

I have half of the field trip forms back now but no parent volunteers so far.  I realize our class is full of working parents but if anyone can make arrangements to accompany us that day it would be greatly appreciated.  Plan B will be to see if we can fit into cars from the other classes…barring that, we will cancel.  If you can be a 911 volunteer, but would rather not have to be, please let me know via email so I can keep that in mind as I try to patchwork a plan together.

Thanks!

Independence Day - Kindergarten!

It's that time of year for Kindergarten students and parents.  I know that many of you have children who have already insisted on walking themselves to class from the front door for some time, so keep doing what you are doing if that is the case!

If you are still walking you child to their coat hooks, please begin the process of letting them go further on their own.  For some, this might mean walking up from the car, an immediate departure at the front door, or being walked to the point where they can see the classroom door…and all points in between.  There is NOT one child in this room who isn't completely and confidently independent in the school throughout the day so this is actually not a stretch for them at all.

Your attention to this step towards independence is very important.  Next year, in Grade 1, they are not supervised at dismissal like they are now.  The bell rings and off they go to retrieve their belongings and make their way to a meeting spot or after school childcare.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Easter Eggs

Please send your child to school on Thursday, April 2 with 2 hard-boiled eggs for our Easter egg decorating extravaganza!  We will also have an Easter egg hunt in the classroom that day.  If you wish to send any treats for the class, please consider that they will be going home in the goody bag (ie. frosted cupcakes would not be practical).

PS, I will bring some extras to accommodate for forgetfulness and/or cracking.

Thanks!

100s Day

We had such a BLAST today for 100s day.  We decided to showcase the projects tomorrow (Thursday) to give it the time it deserves - we just couldn't squeeze it all in on a short day.  Funnest part was making the pictures below…since you won't get a chance to see your children at 100 years of age, here's a glimpse at what they might look like!

Does anyone recognize this from Multicultural Day?

Email me and I will send it home. :-)

100s Day

A little homework over Spring Break!  We will be celebrating 100s day on Wednesday, March 25th.  That is the first week back after Spring Break.  Please have your child complete a "100 challenge" and send them to school with their master-piece on March 25th.  This is completely open to creativity and interest!  For simplicity sake, it is easiest to place items on a sheet of paper, and sometimes this works nicely, but it doesn't for all projects and is certainly not a rule.

Some interesting projects of years past:

Lego made of 100 pieces
100 stickers
100 dried pasta noodles
100 paper clips clipped together like a chain
Jar of 100 jelly beans
100 thumb prints
100 fingers (20 handprints)

We have and will continue to talk about using 10 groups of 10 to get to 100.  This makes the project approachable for EVERYONE because they can all count to 10.  Please remind them of this strategy as they brainstorm ideas and work on their project.  Counting by 10s to get to 100 once it is finished, would be GREAT!

Estimation is also a math skill that they can practice - picking out household objects that they estimate may have enough for 100 for example.

HAVE FUN!

Parent Helper

Our students have been invited to Sutherland to watch a student gymnastics competition on Friday, March 6th! We will be walking up there at 1:00 and returning to the school when the wiggles overcome us.  This is a great community connection, and may inspire some gymnastics aspirations by the end of the day!  I just need 1 parent to join us, but everyone is welcome.  If you can come, please email to let me know :-)

Thanks!
